What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a trauma-focused therapy that helps the brain process and heal from difficult or traumatic experiences.
When something painful happens, our minds sometimes get “stuck” in the emotional and physical sensations of that memory, almost like it’s still happening in the present.

EMDR uses gentle bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or sounds) to help the brain reprocess those memories so they can be stored in a more adaptive, peaceful way. Over time, the memory remains, but the emotional charge and distress connected to it begin to fade.

How EMDR Helps

EMDR is designed to help you feel less triggered by past experiences and more grounded in the present. It allows your mind and body to complete what couldn’t be completed before so you can respond to life’s stressors with greater calm and clarity.

People often describe EMDR as helping them feel “lighter,” “more free,” or “finally unstuck” from the past.

Who is EMDR Helpful For?

EMDR can be helpful for anyone who feels like their past continues to affect their present.
It’s often used to treat:

  • Traumatic or distressing experiences (including single events or complex trauma)

  • Childhood or attachment wounds

  • Anxiety and panic

  • Chronic stress and burnout

  • Grief and loss

  • Relationship difficulties and patterns that feel hard to change

  • Low self-worth or lingering shame

  • Painful memories that still feel “too close”

You don’t need to have experienced a major trauma for EMDR to help. Many clients use it to work through subtle yet impactful experiences, moments that shaped how they see themselves, their bodies, and the world around them.

What to Expect in EMDR Sessions

Before beginning EMDR, we’ll spend time building safety, understanding your story, and creating grounding tools together. EMDR unfolds gently and collaboratively, always at a pace that feels manageable for you.
Sessions often include:

  • Preparation and grounding techniques

  • Identifying past memories or themes that still feel distressing

  • Using bilateral stimulation (eye movements, taps, or sounds) while revisiting the memory

  • Reprocessing and integrating what arises with compassion and care

Our goal isn’t to erase memories, but to help you hold them differently — with more calm, clarity, and compassion for yourself.
